The purpose of the workshop is to discuss the relevance of the imperial model for the analysis of the EU and the meaning of its resurgence in contemporary European studies and related fields. Discussion of the possible underlying normative agendas in the use of the notion of Empire is also welcome.

Looking at the broader picture, this reflection is part and parcel of a wider movement towards the "normalization" of the EU through its comparison with other polities of the past or of the present. A comparative view of the advantages and weaknesses of the approach in terms of Empire regarding other models may also be relevant.
