Job description


You will contribute to teaching in the BA and MA European Studies of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, mainly to courses with a focus on the history of the European integration process. The Maastricht European Studies programmes study Europe and European integration in its broader international, historical, cultural and political context and from an interdisciplinary perspective.

You will also contribute to the research programmes of the Faculty from your own area of expertise. While your teaching activities will take 80% of your time, research will account for 20%, which can be extended through external fundraising.

Requirements

The candidate should be capable of triggering student learning and participation in group discussions. (S)he is an inspiring and stimulating supervisor. As the language of instruction is English, your command of English (oral and writing) should be excellent. Previous experience in working with innovative, interdisciplinary learning approaches and problem-based teaching methods are highly welcomed.

Experience with teaching international classrooms would be preferable. All members of staff are expected to place great emphasis on high quality teaching, as reflected in our system of small-scale problem based learning (PBL).

You will hold a PhD in history. Your research experience and publications demonstrate your expertise in an interdisciplinary approach. Your research experience and publications demonstrate your expertise in European integration history with a particular focus on contemporary history (after 1945). You have published internationally and in peer-reviewed journals, or are willing to develop in this direction. You have evidence of or potential for international excellence in published research.

Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences


The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASoS) has a staff of about 250, and about 1900 students. All programmes are offered in English. Students come from all over the world. FASoS offers two 3-year Bachelor programmes: Arts and Culture, and European Studies, seven different 1-year Master courses and two 2-year research Master programmes. Its Graduate School takes in around 10 PhD students each year. Research is organized around three programmes: ‘Politics and Culture in Europe’; ‘Science, Technology and Society Studies’; and ‘Arts, Media and Culture’. There is also a ‘Globalization and Development Initiative’, which clusters various long-term interdisciplinary collaborative research programmes on themes of Globalization and Development. The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is housed in several recently renovated 18th-century buildings in the historic city centre of Maastricht.

What we have to offer

We offer a 1.0 (full time) appointment as Lecturer for three years. The first year will be a probation period, after a positive assessment the position will be extended for the remaining 2 years.

Depending on experience and qualification, the gross monthly salary is about € 2.977,00 gross per month, scale level 10 (based on a full-time appointment). The gross yearly salary is about € 41.500,00 (based on a full-time appointment). After a positive assessment a promotion to scale 11 is possible in the 2nd year.

If you do not already live in Maastricht (or its direct surroundings) you will be eligible for an allowance for removal costs. If you do not already live in Maastricht (or its direct surroundings) you might be eligible for an allowance for alternative housing.

You will be provided with shared office space and a PC.
