Historical Enquiries into the Rise of the G-7
and the European Council

Conference organized by Federico Romero | EUI-HEC and Emmanuel Mourlon-Druol | University of Glasgow sponsored by Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies and Department of History and Civilization Sala Europa, Villa Schifanoia Via Boccaccio 121, Florence

Florence, 25-27 October 2012

Historians are beginning to look at the early Summits – G-7 and European Council – as a response to the economic difficulties and perceived crisis of the West. The rise of summitry must be contextualized in the transformations of the international system and the global economy in the late 20th century. Archival records allow a fresh investigation in the major Western governments’ motivations, dynamics, and decisions.
The conference will bring together the best specialists of this new field of historical inquiry in order to explore those features of early global governance in their historical context, and open up an interdisciplinary dialogue with social scientists who have studied summits from their own disciplinary perspectives. It will cast new light on the reshaping of Western
coordination and European governance in the late Cold War.
