“Collecting the Memories of an Institution: The oral history programme of the European Commission”

Workshop at the Historical Archives of the European Union, 8 May 2014

Background

On 14 May 2014, the second volume of the history of the European Commission: “The European Commission 1973-1986, History and Memories of an Institution" will be launched in Brussels. As part of this project, a consortium of 22 professors and researchers from 15 universities across Europe, interviewed numerous former Commissioners and European officials who were at the centre of events at the time. To commemorate the deposit of these interviews at the Historical Archives of the European Union, a workshop on: “Collecting the Memories of an Institution: The oral history programme of the European Commission” is organised with the support of the Secretariat General of the European Commission. This workshop takes stock of the oral history aspect of the two volumes produced on the history of the European Commission 1973-1986 and relates the experiences of interviewers and interviewees to archival research and institutional historiography.
