The aim of my PHD dissertation at the European University Institute of Florence is to get a better grasp of the intellectual and cultural roots of European social policies and of the notion of ‘European social model’. By tracing back, during the 1970s and 1980s, the efforts to establish a common European Social Policy and to coordinate national economic and social policies, I analyse how a number of notions have progressively taken shape in a context of deep socio-economic change and in a moment of crisis for European welfare states.
